Tue 11/8 Heathrow

We had a smooth taxi ride to Heathrow where the airport presented its usual scenes of chaos. All went well until we went through Departures where I was accosted by two thugs who could barely speak English (who, it appears, were employed by BAA) and who stole the organic body wash and toothpaste from my hand baggage. This was apparently in the cause of national security.  So it’s OK to start an illegal war which puts the country at increased risk of terrorism but it’s not OK for little old ladies to carry a few harmless toiletries in their land luggage  – but don’t get me started…

It got worse when my tin knee set off the metal detectors and, despite my protestations, I was frisked and searched and they completely took my baggage apart, strewing all my clothes etc over the shelves in full public view and leaving me to repack it all myself.

But let’s not get too downhearted – we’re going on holiday (or trying to!) and it will soon seem like one of the minor hazards of international air travel that we all like to recount.

We caught our Air Canada Airbus 303 flight and, after 9+ hours of newspapers, books, movies and indifferent food (and not enough wine), we landed in Calgary, only a couple of hours after we set off.

There are no photos of Heathrow. The whole place is too boring. And after being mugged and assaulted by the security staff I didn’t feel like it :-(
